Set in ancient Polynesia, the story centers on Moana Waialiki, the strong-willed teenage daughter of Chief Tui, leader of the island of Motunui. From childhood, Moana feels a deep connection to the ocean, which presents her with a small green stone—the heart of Te Fiti, the mother-island goddess whose power creates life.

Motunui is a lush, self-sufficient island society governed by strict traditions. Tui teaches that everything the people need is on the island and forbids sailing beyond the surrounding reef, partly out of fear from personal trauma. Moana's mother, Sina, is more understanding but supports her husband's cautious stance. Moana's closest spiritual ally is her eccentric and wise Gramma Tala, who encourages Moana's fascination with the sea and her ancestors. Tala tells legends of how the demigod Maui stole the heart of Te Fiti long ago to give humanity the power of creation, but in doing so unleashed a fiery demon, Te Ka, and a spreading darkness that withers islands and poisons the ocean.

As Moana grows, she is groomed to become the next chief. When Motunui's fishing grounds empty and the crops begin to fail, the island's crisis mirrors the ancient curse from Tala's stories. In a private moment, Tala shows Moana a hidden cavern filled with ancient voyaging canoes, revealing that their people were once bold wayfinders. Tala reveals that the ocean chose Moana and entrusts her with the heart of Te Fiti, urging her to voyage forth, find Maui, and restore the heart to save their world.

Moana secretly sails beyond the reef, facing storms and inexperience at sea. She eventually reaches a remote island where she encounters Maui, a shapeshifting demigod who is boastful, insecure, and stranded without his magical fishhook. Forced into an uneasy partnership, Moana and Maui set out across the Pacific to recover his hook, confront various dangers, and ultimately reach Te Fiti. Along the way they face Kakamora pirates in coconut armor and a giant treasure-hoarding crab named Tamatoa. Each challenge tests Moana's courage and skills as a wayfinder, while probing Maui's pride and hidden vulnerabilities.

As the voyage continues, Moana struggles with doubt, while Maui reveals his need for human approval. Their relationship shifts from antagonistic to cooperative. Moana embraces the navigational traditions of her ancestors, learning to read the stars and currents. The closer they get to Te Fiti, the more formidable Te Ka's fiery power becomes. Moana must confront external threats and a profound internal question: whether she is truly the one meant to restore balance.
