Mixtape Pluto

Future reclaims his throne on Mixtape Pluto, a 17-track project that finds the Atlanta rapper in peak form. Released September 20, 2024, through Freebandz and Epic Records, this is his first solo mixtape in eight years, following 2016's Purple Reign. Production duties fall mainly to Southside and Wheezy, with additional work from ATL Jacob, FnZ, Honorable C.N.O.T.E., London on da Track, and Neenyo. The sound is classic Future: woozy synthesizers, hard 808s, and his signature Auto-Tuned croon, all wrapped in themes of excess, paranoia, and resilience. It arrives as the third and final Future release of 2024, after his two collaborative albums with Metro Boomin, We Don't Trust You and We Still Don't Trust You. Two singles preceded the drop: "Too Fast" and "South of France," the latter later remixed with Travis Scott and added to a reissued version.

The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 130,000 album-equivalent units, including 10,000 pure sales. It also topped the Top Rap Albums and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts, and reached number one in Canada and the UK R&B/Hip-Hop chart. Critics were largely favorable: Metacritic scored it 76 out of 100. Pitchfork gave it 7.5/10, calling it a return to form, while Rolling Stone awarded 4/5 stars, noting Future sounds reinvigorated. NME also gave 4/5, describing it as cohesive and hard-hitting. The Guardian offered 3/5, saying it doesn't break new ground but solidifies his legacy with solid bangers.

At the 2025 Grammy Awards, the album was nominated for Best Rap Album, losing to Common and Pete Rock's The Auditorium Vol. 1. "Too Fast" also earned a nomination for Best Rap Song. The BET Hip Hop Awards nominated it for Album of the Year. As of early 2025, the album has moved approximately 500,000 album-equivalent units globally, though no official RIAA certification has been announced.[edit]
