Mixtape Pluto

Atlanta rapper Future returned to his solo roots on September 20, 2024, dropping Mixtape Pluto through Freebandz and Epic Records. This 17-track project marks the first time he has released a standalone mixtape since 2016's Purple Reign. The sound leans heavily into classic trap aesthetics with woozy synthesizers and pounding 808s, delivered over Future's signature Auto-Tuned croon. Production duties split primarily between Southside and Wheezy, though ATL Jacob, FnZ, Honorable C.N.O.T.E., London on da Track, and Neenyo also contributed beats. Themes of excess, paranoia, and resilience run through the lyrics.

The album served as the third and final release for the artist in 2024, following his collaborative efforts with Metro Boomin on We Don't Trust You and We Still Don't Trust You. Two singles paved the way for the full project: "Too Fast" and "South of France." The latter track later received a remix featuring Travis Scott, which appeared on a reissued version of the mixtape. Critics responded positively to the return to form, with Pitchfork awarding it 7.5 out of 10 and Rolling Stone giving it four stars.

Commercially, the project dominated charts immediately upon release. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 130,000 album-equivalent units, including 10,000 pure sales. The record also topped the Top Rap Albums and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts while reaching the top spot in Canada and on the UK R&B/Hip-Hop chart. By early 2025, global sales had reached approximately 500,000 equivalent units. Despite its success, no official RIAA certification was announced by that time. [edit]
