The Mission: Impossible film series began in 1996 with Brian De Palma's stylish adaptation of the classic 1960s television show. Tom Cruise stars as Ethan Hunt, an agent of the Impossible Missions Force (IMF) who finds himself framed for the deaths of his entire team. The film established the franchise's signature blend of intricate espionage plots, high-tech gadgetry, and jaw-dropping practical stunts, including Cruise's iconic dangling from a ceiling in the CIA vault scene.

Over the course of seven sequels, the series has evolved from standalone adventures into an interconnected saga, with Christopher McQuarrie taking the helm from the fifth film onward. The franchise has grossed over $4.35 billion worldwide, making it the 16th-highest-grossing film series of all time. Ethan Hunt, a promising IMF field agent, is assigned to a mission in Prague led by veteran operative Jim Phelps. The team's objective is to intercept a rogue agent named Alexander Golitsyn, who is attempting to sell the CIA's NOC list, a document containing the identities of deep-cover agents across Europe. The operation goes catastrophically wrong when Golitsyn is killed and the NOC list is stolen. One by one, the entire team is eliminated, leaving Ethan as the sole survivor.

Upon returning to IMF headquarters, Ethan is accused of being the mole who betrayed the team. IMF Director Kittredge presents evidence that suggests Ethan orchestrated the disaster to cover his tracks. With no one to trust, Ethan goes rogue, determined to clear his name and uncover the real traitor. He contacts an enigmatic arms dealer known only as Max, who is interested in purchasing the NOC list. Ethan convinces Max that he can deliver the list, using her as a pawn to draw out the real culprit.

Ethan assembles a new, unofficial team: disavowed IMF agents Luther Stickell and Franz Krieger. Together, they plan an audacious heist to steal the actual NOC list from CIA headquarters at Langley. The sequence involves Ethan being lowered into a high-security vault on a wire, avoiding motion sensors, heat detectors, and pressure-sensitive floor panels. The team successfully extracts the list, but their victory is short-lived as they realize the mole is still one step ahead.

The trail leads to a climactic confrontation on a high-speed train to Paris. Ethan must identify the traitor, recover the NOC list, and prove his innocence before the IMF closes in on him. The identity of the mole is revealed to be someone close to Ethan, a betrayal that forces him to confront the limits of loyalty and trust in the shadowy world of espionage.[edit]
