About
Mirassol Futebol Clube is a Brazilian football club based in Mirassol, a city in the interior of São Paulo state. Founded on 9 November 1925, the club spent decades competing in regional tournaments before engineering a remarkable rise through the national pyramid. As of the 2025 season, Mirassol plays in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, the top flight of Brazilian football, and also features in the Campeonato Paulista, the state's prestigious league.
The club's ascent has been steady and methodical. After winning the Série D in 2020 and the Série C in 2022, Mirassol secured a first-ever promotion to the Série A by finishing as runners-up in the 2024 Série B. That achievement capped a four-year climb from the fourth division to the elite. The team's success rests on collective organization and a compact defensive approach rather than individual flair, allowing them to compete despite having fewer resources than many of their top-flight rivals.
Home matches are played at the Estádio Municipal José Maria de Campos Maia, commonly called the Maião, which holds roughly 15,000 spectators. The club's colors, yellow and green, mirror the Brazilian national flag, and the nickname 'Leão da Alta Araraquarense' (Lion of the Alta Araraquarense region) reflects local pride. With their recent promotion, Mirassol has become an example of how disciplined management and consistent performance can lift a small club to the highest level.
History
Mirassol Futebol Clube was founded on 9 November 1925 in the town of Mirassol, located in the northwest of São Paulo state. For most of its existence, the club operated in the lower tiers of the Campeonato Paulista, occasionally reaching the top state division but never threatening the national stage. The turning point came in the late 2010s, when a series of promotions transformed the club's trajectory.
In 2020, Mirassol won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série D, the fourth tier, by defeating Floresta 3–1 on aggregate in the final. That triumph earned a spot in the Série C, where the club finished as champions in 2022, beating ABC in the decisive match. The following year, Mirassol competed in the Série B and, in 2024, secured second place, guaranteeing promotion to the Série A for the first time in history. The 2025 season marked their debut in Brazil's top division, a milestone celebrated by the local community.
At the state level, Mirassol won the Campeonato Paulista Série A3 in 1997 and achieved a third-place finish in the top-tier Paulista A1 in 2020. The club's rise has been driven by a pragmatic approach: a solid defensive unit, efficient set pieces, and a squad built on teamwork rather than expensive signings. This formula has allowed them to punch above their weight, and they continue to rely on it in the Série A.
