Minnesota Golden Gophers

The Minnesota Golden Gophers represent the University of Minnesota in NCAA Division I competition, primarily as members of the Big Ten Conference. The athletic department fields 21 varsity teams across nine men's and twelve women's sports, including football, basketball, baseball, ice hockey, wrestling, and volleyball. The football program dates back to 1882, making it one of the oldest in college sports.

Home venues are concentrated on the Minneapolis campus. Huntington Bank Stadium, opened in 2009, seats over 50,000 for football. Williams Arena hosts basketball, while Mariucci Arena and Ridder Arena are the homes for men's and women's ice hockey, respectively. The women's soccer team plays at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on the St. Paul campus.

The Gophers have a storied tradition in ice hockey. The women's team has won six NCAA championships, and the men's program has produced numerous NHL players. In wrestling, the Gophers captured an NCAA team title in 2007. The spirit squad, which originated sideline cheerleading at the university, includes three cheerleading teams, a dance team, and the mascot Goldy Gopher. The football program began on September 29, 1882, with a 4-0 victory over Hamline University. Minnesota joined the Western Conference, later the Big Ten, at its founding in 1896. Under head coach Henry L. Williams from 1900 to 1921, the Gophers won eight conference titles and posted a .786 winning percentage.

The 1930s marked a golden era. Coached by Bernie Bierman, the team won national championships in 1934, 1935, and 1936, and added two more in 1940 and 1941. Radio announcer Halsey Hall coined the term "Golden Gophers" during this period, referencing their all-gold uniforms. The program claims seven national titles overall, with the most recent coming in 1960 under Murray Warmath.

In the modern era, the Gophers have been competitive in the Big Ten but have not won a conference championship since 1967. P.J. Fleck took over as head coach in 2017 and has led the team to six bowl appearances, including a 17-7 win over Wisconsin in 2025 to retain Paul Bunyan's Axe for the second straight year. [edit]
