"A neural implant, a desert city, and a truth buried in neon."

    Overview

MindsEye drops you into the sun-baked sprawl of Redrock, a fictional desert metropolis that wears its Las Vegas inspiration on its sleeve. You play as Jacob Diaz, a former soldier voiced by Alex Hernandez, who wakes up with a mysterious neural implant called the MindsEye lodged in his brain. It triggers memory loss and violent flashbacks, and Jacob's search for answers pulls him through a city of neon, sand, and secrets. The action-adventure gameplay mixes third-person shooting, stealth, and environmental puzzles, with the implant occasionally warping reality to reveal hidden paths or threats.

Build a Rocket Boy, the studio founded by former Rockstar Games president Leslie Benzies, developed the title, with IO Interactive Partners handling the original publishing duties. It launched on 10 June 2025 for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. But despite the pedigree behind it, the game landed with a thud. Critics and players alike tore into it for its clunky combat, repetitive mission design, and a story that never quite coheres. Reviews were strongly negative, and the fallout was swift: IO Interactive Partners cut ties with the developer, and publishing rights reverted back to Build a Rocket Boy. What was meant to be a showcase for a new studio became a cautionary tale about ambition outpacing execution.

The game's post-launch period has been marked by controversy. In July 2026, game workers protested alleged misconduct at Build A Rocket Boy, organized by the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain, drawing attention to workers being replaced by fans brought in for playtests. Meanwhile, a July 2026 CEOWorld feature titled "MindsEye: Building a Game for the Long Run" suggests the developer remains committed to the game long-term, referencing its decade-long development cycle. Update 8 introduced a 6v6 multiplayer mode dubbed "grenade football," widely mocked in the gaming press, and the DLC "Blacklisted" received scathing reviews, with TechRaptor noting it "did nothing" and induced a nap.

    Gameplay

MindsEye blends third-person shooting, stealth, and environmental puzzles, with the neural implant warping reality to reveal hidden paths or threats. Reviews describe it as a standard third-person shooter mixed with Grand Theft Auto-style driving. The controls are simple enough, but combat is widely criticized as clunky and repetitive. The game features high-octane driving sequences and cinematics that its marketing touts as best-in-class. The single-player campaign offers a decent-sized story mode, though mission design grows repetitive. Post-launch, Update 8 added a 6v6 multiplayer mode called "grenade football," which has been widely mocked. The Xbox store page describes the game as "an ever-expanding gameplay experience with a story campaign and an endless stream of new playable content delivered regularly."

    Story

Set in the near-future desert city of Redrock, MindsEye follows Jacob Diaz, a former soldier who wakes up with an experimental neural implant called the MindsEye lodged in his brain. The implant causes memory loss and violent flashbacks, and Diaz's search for answers pulls him through a city of neon, sand, and secrets. The narrative is a sci-fi thriller aiming for cinematic presentation, but critics note the story never quite coheres. The DLC "Blacklisted" follows a character named Julia who kills a cop, impersonates him to find and kill a YouTuber/DJ/streamer, then puts on his mask to break into a party. TechRaptor's scathing review titled "MindsEye's DLC Blacklisted Claims It Will Reveal the Truth. Instead, It Did Nothing and I Took a Nap" captures the reception.
