Milwaukee Bucks

The Milwaukee Bucks are an American professional basketball team based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They joined the National Basketball Association (NBA) as an expansion team on January 22, 1968, following the award of a franchise to Milwaukee Professional Sports and Services, a group led by businessmen Wesley Pavalon and Marvin Fishman. The team name, "Bucks," was chosen through a fan contest, honoring Wisconsin's white-tailed deer. Their home games are played at Fiserv Forum.

After a challenging first season, the Bucks secured the top pick in the 1969 NBA draft and selected Lew Alcindor, who later became known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. This move quickly transformed the team, leading to their first NBA championship in 1971. The Bucks continued to be a strong contender in the 1970s, reaching the NBA Finals again in 1974. Decades later, led by two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, the team captured its second NBA title in 2021, and also won the inaugural 2024 NBA Cup.

Throughout their history, the Bucks have celebrated three conference titles and nineteen division titles. They hold a unique record as the only NBA team to have won championships while representing both the Western and Eastern Conferences. Notable players who have worn the Bucks uniform include Oscar Robertson, Sidney Moncrief, Ray Allen, and current stars like Damian Lillard, alongside their most celebrated figures, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Giannis Antetokounmpo, both of whom earned Finals MVP honors with the franchise.[edit]

The Bucks began play in the 1968–69 season, finishing 27–55. A coin flip win for the first overall pick in 1969 led to drafting Lew Alcindor, who became Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. In 1970, the team traded for Oscar Robertson, forming a dynamic duo. They won the 1971 NBA championship, sweeping the Baltimore Bullets. The Bucks returned to the Finals in 1974 but lost to the Boston Celtics in seven games.

After Abdul-Jabbar's departure in 1975, the Bucks remained competitive behind Sidney Moncrief, winning seven division titles in the 1980s. They reached the conference finals in 1983, 1984, and 1986 but fell short. The team moved to the Bradley Center in 1988. In the 1990s, Ray Allen emerged as a star, leading the Bucks to the conference finals in 2001, where they lost to the Philadelphia 76ers in seven games.

The modern era began with the drafting of Giannis Antetokounmpo in 2013. Under coach Mike Budenholzer, the Bucks became a powerhouse, winning the 2021 NBA championship over the Phoenix Suns. The team moved to Fiserv Forum in 2018. In 2023, they acquired Damian Lillard in a blockbuster trade. The 2023–24 season saw a mid-season coaching change to Doc Rivers, but the Bucks were upset in the first round by the Indiana Pacers.[edit]
