    About This Album

On April 28, 1999, Jive Records released Millennium, the album that turned the Backstreet Boys from a successful act into a global phenomenon. Following their 1997 self-titled U.S. debut and the international Backstreet's Back, this record showed a more polished, mature side of the group. Swedish producers Max Martin and Rami Yacoub, along with Kristian Lundin, shaped a sound that mixed slick pop, soft rock, and contemporary R&B across 12 tracks. The lyrics leaned into love, heartbreak, and youthful optimism, with songs like "I Want It That Way" and "Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely" becoming instant classics.

The commercial impact was staggering. Millennium debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and stayed there for ten non-consecutive weeks. In its first week, it sold 1,134,000 copies in the U.S., a record at the time. The album shipped 11 million copies in the U.S. during 1999 alone and went on to sell over 24 million worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums in history. It also earned the group five Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year. The supporting "Into the Millennium Tour" broke attendance records across North America and Europe, cementing the group's place at the center of pop culture just before the year 2000.
