Military Intelligence Directorate of Israel

The Military Intelligence Directorate, known in Hebrew as Agaf ha-Modi'in and commonly called Aman, sits at the heart of Israel's defense apparatus. As the intelligence arm of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), it gathers, analyzes, and acts on information that shapes the country's military decisions. Established on December 28, 1953, Aman grew out of the IDF's General Staff Intelligence Department, which itself drew heavily from the Haganah's intelligence service, the pre-state underground military organization. Today, Aman operates as an independent branch, separate from the Ground Forces, Navy, and Air Force, reporting directly to the Chief of General Staff.

Aman is the largest component of Israel's intelligence community, working alongside Mossad, which handles foreign espionage, and Shin Bet, responsible for internal security. Its reach is vast, encompassing the cyberwarfare unit 8200, human intelligence unit 504, secret technology unit 81, and the Havatzalot training program. Special operations fall under Sayeret Matkal, the General Staff Reconnaissance Unit, which has carried out some of the IDF's most daring missions. With an annual budget estimated in the billions of shekels (exact figures are classified), Aman's influence extends far beyond the battlefield, shaping policy and strategy at the highest levels.
