Leigh's seven Academy Award nominations, five for screenwriting, two for directing, place him among the most nominated British filmmakers never to win. His three BAFTA wins include the prestigious BAFTA Fellowship, a lifetime achievement honour. He is one of the few directors to have won top prizes at all three major European festivals: Cannes (Palme d'Or for Secrets & Lies), Venice (Golden Lion for Vera Drake), and Berlin (Golden Bear for Vera Drake). His films consistently appear on Sight & Sound and Time Out lists of the greatest British films.
