Mike Brown

Michael Burton Brown stepped onto the basketball court as a player before finding his true calling behind the bench. Born on March 5, 1970, in Columbus, Ohio, this 56-year-old strategist has spent decades shaping NBA rosters. He currently serves as the head coach of the New York Knicks, where he recently guided the franchise to its first championship in 53 years. His journey began in earnest when he took the helm of the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2005. That squad surged to the 2007 NBA Finals before falling to the San Antonio Spurs. Brown earned the NBA Coach of the Year honor in 2009 after steering the Cavaliers to a league-best 66 wins. The team repeated that feat with 61 victories the following year, though a playoff exit against the Boston Celtics led to his dismissal in 2010. Brown's path later took him to Los Angeles, where he replaced Phil Jackson as the Lakers' head coach in 2011. A rough start cost him the job just five games into the 2012–13 season. He returned to Cleveland briefly in 2013 but left after one more season. His tenure as an associate head coach for the Golden State Warriors from 2016 to 2022 proved pivotal. The Warriors defeated his former teams, including the Cavaliers in 2017 and 2018, and beat the Boston Celtics in 2022 to claim titles. During this period, he also coached the Nigeria men's national team at the 2020 Summer Olympics. After leaving the Warriors, Brown joined the Sacramento Kings in 2022. He snapped the longest playoff drought in NBA history by leading the Kings to the postseason in his first year. This achievement made him the first-ever unanimous winner of the NBA Coach of the Year award in 2023. Despite a rocky 13–18 start to the 2024–25 season that ended his time with the Kings, he quickly secured another top job.
