Migi & Dali

The town of Origon Village seems peaceful enough, but for twin brothers Migi and Dali, it's a stage for an elaborate performance. Adopted by the kindly Sonoyama couple, the boys pretend to be a single person named Hitori, swapping places with practiced precision, sliding under tables during meals, coordinating their speech, and never appearing together. Their adoptive parents believe they have one quiet, polite son. In truth, the twins are hunting for their mother's killer.

Nami Sano, best known for the surreal comedy Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto, took a sharp turn with this series. Serialized in Enterbrain's Harta from July 2017 to November 2021, Migi & Dali starts with absurdist humor, the twins' schemes to maintain their ruse are clever and funny, but gradually tightens into a psychological thriller. The atmosphere grows tense as Migi and Dali uncover secrets about the town's residents, each clue bringing them closer to a violent confrontation. Sano balances the tonal shift masterfully, never losing the odd charm that makes the twins endearing even as they resort to manipulation and violence.

The manga spans seven tankōbon volumes. An anime adaptation by Geek Toys and CompTown aired in 2023, directed by Mankyū, with 13 episodes streaming on Crunchyroll. The series carries extra emotional weight as Sano's final completed work; she died of cancer in August 2023. Critics have praised the series for its originality, noting how it defies easy categorization, part mystery, part dark comedy, part heartfelt story about two boys finding a home. Some reviewers have interpreted the twins' dual identity as a metaphor for LGBTQ+ experiences, particularly Dali's fear of being truly known.
