Midea Group started in 1968 as a small workshop in Beijiao, Guangdong, making bottle caps with 23 locals and about 5,000 yuan in capital. Founder He Xiangjian shifted the business into car parts and then electric fans, entering the air conditioning industry in 1985. From there, Midea expanded into refrigerators, washing machines, and a full range of white goods, becoming one of the world's largest appliance manufacturers.

Today, Midea employs around 150,000 people across 200 subsidiaries and over 60 overseas branches, selling products in more than 200 countries and regions. It is the world's largest microwave oven manufacturer and a major OEM supplier for brands like GE and Whirlpool. The company has been listed on the Fortune Global 500 since 2016 and went public on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in 2013. In 2020, Midea reported sales revenue of US$40.5 billion, and by 2022 that figure had grown to roughly US$48 billion.

Midea's product lineup includes residential and commercial air conditioners, dehumidifiers, refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers, ovens, and small kitchen appliances. The company also has a strong presence in HVAC systems and industrial automation; in 2017 it was reportedly the world's largest producer of industrial robots and appliances.
