About
Micron Technology, Inc. is an American semiconductor company that designs and manufactures computer memory and data storage solutions. It produces DRAM, NAND flash, High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), and solid-state drives. Founded in 1978 in Boise, Idaho, Micron is the only major American computer memory manufacturer, forming the 'Big Three' with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.
In 1981, Micron completed its first wafer fabrication unit, Fab 1, producing 64K DRAM chips. The company went public in 1984. Key acquisitions include Numonyx in 2010, Elpida in 2013, Inotera in 2016, and Intel's stake in IM Flash Technologies in 2019. Micron markets consumer products under the Crucial brand (discontinued February 2026) and previously offered the Ballistix gaming sub-brand (discontinued February 2022). From 2006 to 2017, it owned Lexar, a memory card and USB drive brand.
Sanjay Mehrotra has served as president, CEO, and chairman since May 2017. A co-founder of SanDisk, he led it until its $19 billion acquisition by Western Digital. On May 26, 2026, Micron reached a $1 trillion market capitalization, driven by surging demand for its HBM chips used in AI and high-performance computing. The company reported a 346% revenue surge in mid-2026.
