Michael Ondaatje

Michael Ondaatje's literary achievements are remarkable for their range and depth. Winning the Booker Prize for The English Patient was a career-defining moment, and the novel's later recognition as the Golden Man Booker in 2018 placed it above all other Booker winners from the prize's first five decades. His ability to move between poetry, fiction, and memoir, while maintaining a consistent quality, is rare. The Giller Prize for Anil's Ghost and multiple Governor General's Awards further attest to his sustained excellence. In 2026, at age 82, he published a new poetry collection, demonstrating an enduring creative drive that few writers achieve.
