Miami Marlins

The Miami Marlins are an American professional baseball team based in Miami. The Marlins compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) East Division. The team plays its home games at LoanDepot Park.

The franchise began play as an expansion team in the 1993 season as the Florida Marlins. The Marlins originally played home games at Joe Robbie Stadium, which they shared with the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL). In 2012, the team moved to LoanDepot Park (then known as Marlins Park), their first exclusive home designed for baseball. As part of an agreement with park owner, Miami-Dade County, to use the stadium, the franchise changed its name to the Miami Marlins prior to the 2012 season.

With a record of 2,382–2,792 (.460), the Marlins have the second lowest winning percentage and fewest postseason appearances (four) among active MLB franchises. Despite this, the Marlins won the World Series during their first two playoff runs in 1997 and 2003. Jeff Conine, an inaugural member of the franchise, was the only player to appear for the Marlins in the World Series in both of their championship seasons.

All four of their playoff appearances came as wild card teams, making them one of two MLB franchises (along with the Colorado Rockies) to have never won a division title, as well as the only franchise to have never appeared in back-to-back postseasons. The Marlins were the first team to win the World Series as a wild card.

The franchise's only retired number is Jackie Robinson's universally retired #42. However, #16 has been out of circulation since the death of José Fernández in 2016. [edit]

The Miami Marlins franchise was awarded on June 10, 1990, with original owner Wayne Huizenga. The team, then named the Florida Marlins, played its first game on April 5, 1993, against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Joe Robbie Stadium. Charlie Hough, then 45, earned the first win in franchise history. The inaugural season drew an average of 37,838 fans per game, a team record that still stands.

The Marlins made their first postseason in 1997 as a wild card, defeating the San Francisco Giants and Atlanta Braves before winning the World Series in seven games over the Cleveland Indians. That team, managed by Jim Leyland, featured players like Kevin Brown, Gary Sheffield, and Edgar Renteria, whose walk-off single in Game 7 clinched the title. After the championship, the team underwent a fire sale, trading many key players.

In 2003, the Marlins again reached the postseason as a wild card. Under manager Jack McKeon, who took over mid-season, they upset the Giants and Cubs, then defeated the New York Yankees in six games to win their second World Series. Josh Beckett was named World Series MVP after a complete-game shutout in Game 6. The 2003 team also featured rookie Miguel Cabrera, Dontrelle Willis, and veterans Ivan Rodriguez and Jeff Conine.

After 19 seasons at Joe Robbie Stadium (later renamed Sun Life Stadium), the team moved into Marlins Park in 2012. The stadium, now called LoanDepot Park, features a retractable roof and air conditioning. The franchise changed its name to the Miami Marlins as part of the stadium agreement. The Marlins have recorded six no-hitters, all during the Florida Marlins era: Al Leiter (1996), Kevin Brown (1997), A.J. Burnett (2001), Anibal Sanchez (2006), Henderson Alvarez (2013), and Edinson Volquez (2017). Two Marlins have hit for the cycle: Luis Arraez (2023) and Xavier Edwards (2024).

The Marlins have had 16 managers in franchise history. Don Mattingly is the winningest manager by total wins (443–587, .430) and managed from 2016 to 2022. Jack McKeon has the best winning percentage (.522) among managers with at least 500 games, leading the team to the 2003 championship. Jim Leyland managed the 1997 championship team. Other notable managers include Joe Girardi, who won NL Manager of the Year in 2006, and Skip Schumaker, who led the team to a wild card berth in 2023. Clayton McCullough became manager in 2025. [edit]
