Miami Heat

The Miami Heat are a professional basketball team based in Miami, Florida, competing in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference. Founded in 1988 as an expansion team, the Heat began play in the 1988–89 season. The team plays its home games at the Kaseya Center (formerly American Airlines Arena) in downtown Miami, having previously played at the Miami Arena.

The Heat have won three NBA championships: in 2006, 2012, and 2013. Their first title came behind Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O'Neal, with Pat Riley returning as head coach mid-season. The back-to-back championships in 2012 and 2013 were led by the "Big Three" of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh, who guided the team to four consecutive NBA Finals appearances from 2011 to 2014. The Heat also reached the NBA Finals in 2020 and 2023 with a core of Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, and Tyler Herro.

The team is known for its "Heat Culture," a philosophy instilled by Pat Riley emphasizing conditioning, toughness, and accountability. The Heat hold the record for the NBA's third-longest winning streak of 27 straight games during the 2012–13 season. The Miami Heat were established in 1988 as one of four NBA expansion teams. Under first head coach Ron Rothstein, the Heat struggled in their early seasons, winning just 15 games in their inaugural year. The franchise gained traction in the mid-1990s when Pat Riley became team president and head coach. Riley orchestrated trades for Alonzo Mourning and Tim Hardaway, leading to four consecutive division titles from 1996 to 2000.

In 2003, the Heat drafted Dwyane Wade with the fifth overall pick. Two years later, the team acquired Shaquille O'Neal from the Los Angeles Lakers. With Riley returning to the sidelines mid-season, the Heat won their first NBA championship in 2006, defeating the Dallas Mavericks in six games. After O'Neal's departure and a period of decline, the team signed LeBron James and Chris Bosh in 2010, forming a superteam alongside Wade. Under coach Erik Spoelstra, the Heat reached the NBA Finals four straight times (2011–2014), winning titles in 2012 and 2013. The 2012–13 team set a franchise-record 66 wins and a 27-game winning streak.

Following James's departure in 2014 and the eventual exits of Wade and Bosh, the Heat rebuilt around Jimmy Butler, acquired in 2019. Butler, along with Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro, led Miami to the NBA Finals in 2020 and 2023. The team traded Butler in early 2025.
