    About

MGM+ is an American premium television network and streaming platform. It operates as a subsidiary of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), which is now part of Amazon MGM Studios. The service focuses on delivering a curated selection of content, including recent and classic movies, original series, documentaries, and comedy and music specials. MGM+ aims to provide quality programming, often catering to viewers interested in genres such as crime dramas and historical epics.

The network first launched on October 30, 2009, under the name Epix. It was initially conceived as a joint venture between Paramount Pictures, Lionsgate, and MGM, intended to serve as a dedicated premium outlet for films from these studios. Mark Greenberg, a former executive at HBO and Showtime, played a key role in developing the business plan and served as the founding president and CEO. In January 2023, Epix underwent a rebranding and officially became MGM+, a change that aligned the service more closely with the identity of its parent studio.

    Mission

MGM+ aims to provide a curated selection of premium entertainment content, including original series, films, documentaries, and specials. The service focuses on quality over quantity, offering a distinct programming slate that appeals to viewers seeking specific genres and high-caliber productions.

    History

MGM+ began its journey as Epix, launching on October 30, 2009. This venture was initially a collaboration between Paramount Pictures, Lionsgate, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), designed to offer a dedicated premium platform for their film libraries. Mark Greenberg, who had prior experience at HBO and Showtime, was instrumental in crafting the network's strategy and served as its founding president and CEO from 2008 until MGM acquired full control.

The parent company, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, boasts a much longer and storied history, dating back to its formation on April 17, 1924. It was created through the merger of Metro Pictures Corporation, Goldwyn Pictures, and Louis B. Mayer Pictures, with Marcus Loew, Louis B. Mayer, and Frank Joseph Godsol being key figures in its establishment. MGM was once a dominant force in Hollywood, recognized for its lavish productions, particularly musicals, during the 1930s and 1940s.

In 2022, Amazon acquired MGM, a move that paved the way for further integration and rebranding. Following this acquisition, Epix was officially rebranded as MGM+ in January 2023, a strategic decision to capitalize on the recognition and legacy of the MGM brand. This rebranding marked a new chapter for the premium television service, aiming to strengthen its identity within the competitive streaming and cable landscape.
