Born in the small town of Winterswijk in the province of Gelderland, Mexx Meerdink began his footballing journey in local youth leagues before making the pivotal move to the renowned AZ Alkmaar academy. Unlike many peers who might have sought training in larger metropolitan hubs immediately, Meerdink integrated deeply into the AZ system from a young age, focusing exclusively on football without public records of other extracurricular pursuits or higher education. He progressed steadily through the U17 and U19 levels, showcasing a natural talent for reading the game and maintaining composure under pressure during matches. His development within the club's structure was defined by a focus on both individual skill and tactical understanding, honed in an environment that demanded strict adherence to disciplinary standards expected of first-team prospects. By the time he reached his late teens, Meerdink had become a standout figure in the youth setup, drawing attention for his consistent goal-scoring record against similarly aged opponents and his ability to find space in defensive lines. This period laid the groundwork for his transition to senior football without the need for external scouting or discovery stories; his path was internal and methodical, rooted in the specific geography of Winterswijk and the rigorous pathways provided by the AZ infrastructure.[edit]

Meerdink made his professional debut for AZ Alkmaar, transitioning quickly from reserve teams to the main Eredivisie squad. His breakthrough came during the mid-2020s when he secured a starting forward position, becoming a vital component of the club's attacking line. Reports indicate he recorded multiple goals and assists during this period, contributing significantly to AZ's competitive standing in the league. A major milestone occurred when he earned his first call-up to the Netherlands national team, marking his entry onto the international stage and distinguishing him as a player capable of representing his country at the highest level. In 2026, he signed a contract extension that keeps him at AZ Alkmaar until June 30, 2030, signaling the club's long-term belief in his potential. Despite facing injuries, a challenge noted in his social media posts where he stated "pain is the fuel for growth," he maintained resilience, using setbacks as motivation for improvement. During the 2026/2027 season, he continued to be a central figure in AZ's attacking line, further solidifying his reputation as a reliable striker. By 2026, his market value had risen to €8.2 million, placing him among the highest-valued young forwards in the Eredivisie, a testament to his consistent performance and future potential.[edit]
