Mercedes Martinez

Jazmin Benitez, professionally known as Mercedes Martinez, is an American former professional wrestler who spent over two decades on the independent circuit before joining major promotions. Born in Waterbury, Connecticut, she built a reputation as one of the most skilled and versatile competitors in women's wrestling, mastering brawling, striking, and technical grappling.

Her career reached new heights when she signed with WWE in 2020, though she remained best known for her dominance in organizations like SHIMMER, Women Superstars Uncut, and Shine Wrestling. Martinez holds multiple championships across these promotions and was ranked as the second-best female wrestler in the world by Pro Wrestling Illustrated at the peak of her career.

In January 2026, she announced that the year would be her final run in the ring, aiming to close her legacy while still active. Tragically, her retirement tour ended prematurely after she suffered a torn ACL during a match in August 2026, forcing her into immediate surgery and permanent retirement from in-ring competition. [edit]

Jazmin Benitez grew up in Waterbury, Connecticut, where she developed an early interest in physical performance and athletics. Her path to the squared circle began in earnest when she sought out formal training under Jason Knight, a former ECW television champion. Knight provided the foundational instruction that allowed her to transition from a fan to a competitor.

She further refined her craft under the mentorship of Afa Anoa'i, widely known as The Wild Samoan. This guidance helped shape her unique style, blending the power of traditional wrestling with the agility and precision required for high-level technical matches. She trained rigorously for several years before making her official debut in November 2000.

For the first decade of her career, Martinez worked exclusively on the independent circuit. She took every opportunity to wrestle in small venues across the United States, building a name through sheer consistency and skill rather than mainstream marketing. During this period, she honed her ability to adapt to different opponents and styles, establishing herself as a reliable main event talent who could draw crowds simply by stepping into the ring. [edit]

Martinez broke through in the mid-2000s as a cornerstone of the women's independent scene. She became a three-time Women Superstars Uncut (WSU) Champion, proving her longevity and dominance in a promotion dedicated entirely to female talent. Her success extended to SHIMMER, where she captured the championship twice, and she also held the Shine Championship and the Phoenix of Rise title.

Her reputation eventually attracted the attention of major national promotions. In 2020, she signed with WWE, bringing her extensive experience to their roster. While she faced challenges regarding her role within the company, her presence was notable for her gritty, brawling aesthetic and distinctive tattoo sleeves. She also appeared in All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and Ring of Honor (ROH), contributing to the growing visibility of women's wrestling.

The latter part of her career was defined by her commitment to finishing strong. In January 2026, she declared that the year would mark her final season in the ring. This decision led to the 'Last Run Tour,' a series of matches designed to celebrate her legacy. However, the tour ended abruptly on August 27, 2026, when she tore her ACL during a match. Following surgery the next day, she officially announced the end of her in-ring career, leaving behind a record of nearly 30 years of service. [edit]

Martinez projects a gritty, authentic, and highly skilled image that resonates with purists and casual fans alike. She is known for her grim-faced demeanor in the ring and her extensive sleeve tattoos, which have become part of her signature look. Her style blends hard-hitting brawling with precise technical wrestling, earning her respect as one of the most complete performers of her generation.

Media outlets and fans view her as a pioneer who paved the way for modern women's wrestling. Her social media presence is direct and focused on her work as a coach and her reflections on her career. She is celebrated for her professionalism and her ability to perform at a high level well into her forties. [edit]
