    About This Album

Lorde retreated to a house in Los Angeles for three months after the world tour for her debut album ended, emerging with a record that mapped the chaos of a single night out. The result was Melodrama, released on June 16, 2017, which abandoned the sparse production of her previous work for a dense, maximalist synth-pop sound. She worked closely with Jack Antonoff and Frank Dukes to build layers of pulsing synthesizers and piano melodies that mirrored the emotional volatility of young adulthood.

The ten-track sequence functions as a narrative arc rather than a collection of singles. It opens with "Green Light" at the start of a party and moves through drunken revelry, heartbreak, and isolation before closing with the reflective "Perfect Places." This structure allowed Lorde to explore themes of fame and breakups without relying on traditional verse-chorus formulas, creating a cohesive story about the sharp shifts between euphoria and despair.
