About
Melbourne United is a powerhouse of Australian basketball, representing Victoria's capital in the National Basketball League (NBL). The team calls John Cain Arena home, a venue that regularly fills with some of the most passionate fans in the league. Their journey began in 1984 as the Melbourne Tigers, a name that stuck for over three decades before a controversial rebrand in 2014.
The franchise's early identity was forged by the Gaze family. Coach Lindsay Gaze and his son Andrew, a star guard, led the Tigers from the start, building a culture of excellence that produced two championships in the 1990s. They were backed by club legends like Dave Simmons, Lanard Copeland, and Mark Bradtke, who became household names in Melbourne's sporting scene. A remarkable run of four straight NBL Grand Finals between 2006 and 2009 brought two more titles, with Chris Anstey and Darryl McDonald leading the charge.
As Melbourne United, the team has continued its winning ways, claiming championships in 2018 and 2021. With six NBL titles in total, the franchise sits tied with the Sydney Kings for second on the all-time list, trailing only the Perth Wildcats, who have ten. The team's ability to adapt and stay competitive across eras speaks to a strong organizational culture and a loyal fan base that has stuck with them through every change.
History
Melbourne United began life in 1984 as the Melbourne Tigers, and the Gaze family shaped its earliest chapters. Lindsay Gaze coached the side for decades, while his son Andrew became the face of the franchise and one of Australia's greatest ever players. Their first NBL championship arrived in 1993, followed by another in 1997, with support from Dave Simmons, Lanard Copeland, and Mark Bradtke.
The 2000s brought a new era under coach Al Westover. Between 2006 and 2009, the Tigers reached four straight Grand Finals, winning in 2006 and 2008 behind Chris Anstey and Darryl McDonald. After the 2014 rebrand to Melbourne United, the team kept winning. Dean Vickerman took over as coach in 2016, and his squad claimed the 2018 title with a roster featuring Chris Goulding and Casper Ware. In 2021, they added another championship, beating the Wildcats in the finals.
In August 2026, the club made a statement signing by bringing in former NBA guard Cole Anthony on a one-year deal. Anthony, the 15th pick in the 2020 draft, arrived after stints with Orlando and Milwaukee. He joins new head coach Jacob Chance for the 2026-27 season, marking a fresh chapter for the franchise.
