Okur's career is defined by a series of historic firsts for Turkish basketball. He was the first Turkish citizen to win an NBA championship, the first Turkish player selected to an NBA All-Star Game, and later the first Turkish citizen to coach in the NBA. These achievements paved the way for a generation of Turkish players and made him a national hero. His record for the highest single-game scoring total by a Turkish NBA player stood until March 2024, when Alperen Sengun surpassed it with a 45-point game.
