    Overview

Capcom rebooted its flagship robot for the 16-bit era with Mega Man X, a 1993 platformer for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Set a century after the original series, the game introduces a darker, more mature world where advanced robots called Reploids can think and feel like humans. Some go rogue, becoming Mavericks, and it falls to X, Dr. Light's final creation, and his partner Zero to stop the Maverick leader Sigma from wiping out humanity. The shift to the SNES let series artist Keiji Inafune and his team reinvent the core gameplay while keeping the classic formula. Players still choose from eight stages in any order and gain new weapons from each boss, but X can now dash, scale walls, and collect armor upgrades that unlock special moves. The controls feel fluid and responsive, making the action faster and more dynamic than the NES titles.

Mega Man X earned strong reviews for its tight gameplay, vibrant graphics, and memorable soundtrack. Critics praised how it modernized the franchise without losing its identity. The game became a long-running success on the SNES and later appeared on PC, mobile, and virtual console services. A PSP remake, Mega Man Maverick Hunter X, came out in 2005, and the original was included in the Super NES Classic Edition and the Mega Man X Legacy Collection. Its sequel, Mega Man X2, followed in 1994.

    Gameplay

Mega Man X retains the stage-select structure of its predecessors: eight Maverick stages can be tackled in any order, each ending with a boss that grants a unique weapon. The game introduces a dash move, wall-jumping between adjacent walls, and a chargeable X-Buster that fires a more powerful shot. Hidden armor capsules scattered through stages contain parts that upgrade X's abilities: a helmet prevents damage from low ceilings, boots enable an air dash, and a full armor set unlocks a screen-clearing Giga Attack. Players can also find Sub-Tanks that refill health. A secret Hadoken move, borrowed from Street Fighter, can be obtained by collecting all armor upgrades and a Sub-Tank, then performing a specific input on the title screen.

    Story

In the 22nd century, Dr. Thomas Light's final creation, X, is discovered by Dr. Cain, who uses his design to mass-produce Reploids. Some Reploids turn Maverick, and the Maverick Hunters are formed to stop them. Sigma, the Hunters' leader, himself goes Maverick and leads a rebellion. The player controls X, who is summoned to investigate. X meets Zero, a mysterious Hunter who becomes his ally. Together they fight through Sigma's forces, defeating eight Mavericks. In the final stages, X confronts Sigma, who reveals he has taken over a Reploid body. After a tough battle, Sigma's body is destroyed, but his virus escapes, setting up future conflicts.
