Matthew Modine's trophy shelf is not crowded, and he would probably tell you that is fine. What he does have is a Venice Volpi Cup, shared with the Streamers ensemble in 1983, and a special Golden Globe for the Short Cuts cast a decade later. Both are ensemble honors, which feels appropriate for an actor who has spent his career fitting into other people's visions rather than building his own monument. The nominations tell a similar story: an Emmy and a Golden Globe for And the Band Played On, another Globe nod for What the Deaf Man Heard. He has worked with Kubrick, Altman and Nolan, which is a different kind of distinction entirely. His later honors have come from philanthropy and from the Stella Adler Studio, which counts him among its distinguished alumni.
