About
Matchbox, the die-cast toy car brand that has been a staple of childhoods for over seven decades, began in 1953 as a brainchild of Lesney Products, a British company. The name came from the small, matchbox-like boxes that held the original miniature vehicles, a packaging choice that would become iconic. Today, the brand is owned by Mattel, Inc., which acquired it in 1997, but its journey to that point was anything but straightforward.
After Lesney Products went bankrupt in 1982, Universal Toys stepped in, purchasing most of its assets and establishing Matchbox International Ltd. to keep production alive. Tyco Toys then took the reins in 1992, before Mattel's acquisition. Over the years, the brand expanded far beyond its initial 1-75 scale cars, venturing into larger die-cast models, plastic kits, slot car racing sets, and even action figures.
The packaging evolved too. In the 1980s, Matchbox shifted to plastic and cardboard blister packs, a common approach for die-cast competitors like Hot Wheels. But by the 2000s, the classic box style returned, catering to collectors with special anniversary editions, such as the 35th Anniversary of Superfast in 2004 and the 50th in 2019. Today, Matchbox continues to produce a wide range of scale model vehicles and toy garages, maintaining its legacy as a beloved name in toy cars.
