    About

MasterChef is a reality competition cooking show that began on BBC One in 1990. Created by Franc Roddam, the series pits amateur cooks against each other in a series of culinary challenges judged by professional chefs. The format has become a global phenomenon, adapted in over 65 territories and broadcast in more than 200 countries, with an estimated global viewership of over 300 million.

The competition typically involves dozens of home cooks progressing through a knockout tournament over several weeks. Challenges include the Calling Card round where contestants present a signature dish, the Reinvention Test using leftover ingredients, the Palate Test requiring identification of components in a prepared dish, and mass catering challenges for large groups. Contestants also face international assignments, cooking in professional kitchens abroad. The show's structure has evolved over time, with the American version introducing twists like team challenges and pressure tests.

MasterChef holds the Guinness World Record as the most successful cookery television format. The franchise has spawned numerous spin-offs, including Junior MasterChef, Celebrity MasterChef, MasterChef: The Professionals, and a live touring stage show. The show's influence extends beyond television, with many former contestants launching professional culinary careers, opening restaurants, and publishing cookbooks.

    History

The first episode of MasterChef aired on 2 July 1990 on BBC One under the full title MasterChef: The British Grand Prix for Amateur Chefs. Hosted by Loyd Grossman, the debut featured three amateur cooks given two and a half hours and a £30 budget to prepare a three-course meal. Guests Richard Shepherd and Michael Caine joined as judges. The first series was won by Joan Bunting, who beat Brian Glover in the final. The original run lasted 11 years before ending.

In 2005, the show was revived as MasterChef Goes Large, a retooled version with new presenters John Torode and Gregg Wallace. This incarnation adopted a more dramatic reality-TV style, with voiceover by India Fisher and a heightened soundtrack. The 2005 series was won by Thomasina Miers, who later founded the Wahaca restaurant chain. The show reverted to the simpler name MasterChef in 2008. The UK edition is now approaching its 20th year in this revived format.

The American version premiered on Fox in 2010, with judges Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich, and Graham Elliot. It has since produced 16 seasons, with the most recent featuring Ramsay, Bastianich, and Tiffany Derry as judges. The show's set has moved over the years: the original UK set was at Ram Brewery in Wandsworth, then 3 Mills Studio from 2014 to 2023, and a new bespoke set in Birmingham from 2024 onward as part of the BBC's regional production push. The American soundstage is located in Van Nuys, Los Angeles.

    Cultural Impact

MasterChef's success directly inspired the creation of The Great British Bake Off, which borrowed the amateur-competition format and applied it to baking. Almost all winners have continued in the food industry, opening restaurants, writing cookbooks, or hosting their own shows. The format's global reach has made it a staple of reality television, with localized versions in dozens of countries adapting the challenges to regional cuisines. The show has also been credited with popularizing home cooking and gastronomy among general audiences.

    Controversies

MasterChef has faced occasional criticism over judging decisions and contestant treatment. In 2018, a controversy arose when a contestant on the Australian version was accused of using a pre-prepared ingredient, leading to a re-evaluation of rules. The show has also been criticized for lack of diversity among winners in some territories, though recent seasons have seen more varied representation.
