Master Keaton
Hokusei Katsushika, Naoki Urasawa, Takashi Nagasaki
Overview
Taichi Hiraga Keaton isn't your average archaeologist. Sure, he's driven to prove his theories about ancient civilizations, but that's just one facet of his life. He also works as a sharp-witted insurance investigator for a major British firm, and if that wasn't enough, he's a former member of the elite Special Air Service. This unique blend of skills makes him the perfect protagonist for this episodic adventure and mystery manga.
Each chapter of Master Keaton presents a self-contained story, plunging Keaton into complex situations that demand his diverse talents. Whether it's uncovering historical secrets, navigating espionage plots, or untangling intricate personal dramas, Keaton relies on his intellect and resourcefulness. The series beautifully explores themes of identity, the search for belonging, and how our past actions continue to ripple through our lives, all while showcasing his knack for deduction and survival.
Created by Hokusei Katsushika, Naoki Urasawa, and Takashi Nagasaki, with Urasawa also providing the illustrations, Master Keaton was serialized in Shogakukan's Big Comic Original magazine from 1988 to 1994. It ran for 144 chapters, collected into 18 tankōbon volumes. The series has been a significant hit, selling over 20 million copies in Japan by 2014. Viz Media brought it to North America, with the first English volume released in December 2014. Critics often highlight Urasawa's meticulous artwork and the compelling, suspenseful narratives that skillfully blend action with character depth.
