Maryland Terrapins

The Maryland Terrapins represent the University of Maryland, College Park in NCAA Division I athletics across twenty varsity sports. The program adopted its current name in 1932 under coach Harry C. Byrd, replacing earlier monikers like the Old Liners to honor the diamondback terrapin native to the Chesapeake Bay. This choice reflected Byrd's hometown of Crisfield and established a unique visual identity that persists today. The team stands alone among U.S. universities for officially sanctioning four colors, red, white, black, and gold, which match the Maryland state flag.

Competing primarily in the Big Ten Conference since 2014, the Terps previously spent sixty years in the Atlantic Coast Conference after leaving the Southern Conference. Football games take place at SECU Stadium on campus, while basketball matches occur at the Xfinity Center. Men's lacrosse remains a historic powerhouse for the university, having secured multiple national titles including victories in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2014, 2017, and 2022.

The 2026 season opened with a dominant 62–0 victory over Hampton Pirates on September 5. That performance highlighted offensive capabilities but occurred alongside off-field disciplinary issues involving player Josiah Teasley and an indefinite suspension for a wide receiver following unrelated convictions. Athletics at the University of Maryland began organizing around 1905, though the specific nickname "Terrapins" did not appear until 1932. Before that designation, teams went by names such as the Old Liners or the Blue and Gray. Coach Harry C. Byrd proposed the new name after learning about the diamondback terrapin from his home in Crisfield, where the reptile was common along the shoreline.
