Molly Shannon first performed a version of Mary Katherine Gallagher in a student sketch show called The New York City Players while studying drama at NYU in the late 1980s. The character's name came from Shannon's mother's college friend, a woman who later became a theology professor at Notre Dame and gave permission for the name's use.
