    Overview

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is an upcoming 2.5D fighting game from Arc System Works, the studio behind Guilty Gear and Dragon Ball FighterZ. Published by Sony Interactive Entertainment and developed in collaboration with PlayStation Studios XDev, it launches on PlayStation 5 and Windows on August 6, 2026. The game was announced during a PlayStation State of Play showcase in June 2025, immediately drawing attention for its bold 4v4 tag-team twist and vibrant anime-inspired art style.

The core innovation is a scaling tag system. Matches begin with a single point fighter and one assist character. By dealing damage or performing Wall Breaks that transition fights across multiple arenas within a stage, players unlock a third and fourth fighter. This escalates into a full 4v4 brawl where players can alternate between calling in off-screen assists and swapping the active leader. The combat uses a three-button layout with auto-combos, universal launchers, and an Assemble system that lets directional inputs trigger specific assist attacks. An Assemble Smash functions as an armored overhead on the ground and a projectile-nullifying dash in the air.

The base roster includes 20 characters, mixing A-listers like Spider-Man and Iron Man with deeper cuts. Post-launch plans promise four additional fighters and one stage. A one-shot comic titled MARVEL Tōkon: First Strike was announced to expand the game's lore. A closed beta for PS5 ran December 5–7, 2025, featuring eight playable characters and online modes. Cross-platform play between PS5 and PC is supported, alongside offline arcade and story modes.

    Gameplay

Matches in Tōkon: Fighting Souls start with one point fighter and one assist character. Two more fighters remain locked until specific conditions are met. Accumulating damage or performing Wall Breaks that shatter the stage and transition the fight to a new arena unlocks the third fighter. Repeating this unlocks the fourth. Once all four are active, players can switch between an assist system where off-screen fighters attack on call and a tag system where the leader is swapped and controlled directly.

The control scheme uses three attack buttons: Light, Medium, and Heavy. 2H is a universal launcher. Each button also has an auto-combo. The Assemble system maps each off-screen fighter to a direction plus the assist button: 5A or 6A for assist 1, 2A for assist 2, 4A for assist 3. The Assemble Smash costs one bar of the Assembly Gauge and is an armored overhead on the ground; in the air it becomes a forward dash that nullifies projectiles. A separate Skill Gauge powers super moves and EX moves.

Stages feature multiple arenas connected by Wall Breaks. The game runs on Unreal Engine 5, with Arc System Works' signature cel-shaded art style rendering Marvel characters and environments. Online modes support ranked and casual matchmaking with cross-platform play between PS5 and PC. Local play supports one to two players.

    Story

The story mode casts players through a reimagined Marvel universe where heroes and villains clash in Arc System Works' anime-inspired style. A full plot synopsis has not been detailed, but the narrative is tied to the comic one-shot MARVEL Tōkon: First Strike, which was announced to launch alongside the game. The comic likely introduces original conflicts and character dynamics unique to this version of the Marvel multiverse.
