About
Marvel Television was the small-screen division of Marvel Entertainment, chartered to produce live-action and animated series based on the company's extensive comic book library. It was officially formed on June 28, 2010, following the box-office success of Iron Man (2008), which convinced Marvel to bring its television production in-house rather than continue licensing characters to outside studios. The division was led by Jeph Loeb, a veteran of both comic book writing and television production, who had previously worked on Smallville and Heroes. Loeb served as executive vice president and head of television throughout the division's operational period.
Operating out of ABC Studios in Los Angeles, Marvel Television forged partnerships with ABC, Netflix, Hulu, and Freeform to develop series set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Its most notable productions included Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013–2020), which ran for seven seasons on ABC, and the interconnected Netflix series, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and the miniseries The Defenders, that built a street-level corner of the MCU. The division also collaborated with 20th Century Fox on X-Men-adjacent shows like Legion and The Gifted, while its animation wing produced series such as Marvel's Avengers Assemble and Ultimate Spider-Man.
The relationship between Marvel Television and Marvel Studios was complicated. In August 2015, the two were formally separated, with Marvel Television remaining under Marvel Entertainment while Marvel Studios operated independently under Kevin Feige. That arrangement lasted until October 2019, when Marvel Television was transferred to Marvel Studios, and by December 2019 the division was fully absorbed into the film studio. The Marvel Television name continues as a production label under Marvel Studios for certain series, though its independent operations have ceased. Marvel Entertainment itself was dissolved on March 29, 2023, with its functions folded into The Walt Disney Company.
