Mario's origin has two contradictory narratives. In his first appearance, the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong, he was a carpenter named Jumpman trying to rescue a damsel named Pauline from a giant ape. He was renamed Mario after Mario Segale, the landlord of Nintendo of America's warehouse. His iconic design—mustache, overalls, and cap—was born from the graphical limitations of arcade hardware at the time.

A later retcon, introduced in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (1995), portrays Mario and his twin brother Luigi as infants delivered by a stork to the Mushroom Kingdom after being kidnapped by Kamek, Bowser's minion. This version places Mario's birthplace in the Mushroom Kingdom, contradicting earlier media that established him as an Italian-American from Brooklyn, New York. [edit]

Mario is cheerful, optimistic, and endlessly courageous. He never hesitates to help those in need, whether it's rescuing Princess Peach or fixing a broken pipe. Despite his heroic feats, he remains humble and down-to-earth, often expressing his joy with a hearty "It's-a me, Mario!" Mario's core story arc revolves around repeatedly rescuing Princess Peach from Bowser, a formula established in Super Mario Bros. (1985). Over time, his role expanded far beyond this premise. In Super Mario 64, he explored a 3D castle to save Peach. In Super Mario Odyssey, he journeyed across kingdoms to stop Bowser's wedding. He has also taken on roles as a doctor (Dr. Mario), a race car driver (Mario Kart), an athlete in various sports, and even a transformed being like a flying tanuki or a cat.
