    Overview

David E. Kelley adapts Rufi Thorpe's 2024 novel into a sharp, warm comedy-drama that landed on Apple TV+ in April 2026. Eight episodes unfold the story of Margo Millet, a Fullerton College freshman whose life veers off course when she falls pregnant by her married English professor. Elle Fanning plays Margo with a brittle, determined energy, while Michelle Pfeiffer brings layered regret to her mother Shyanne, a former Hooters waitress now engaged to a youth pastor. Nick Offerman's Jinx, an ex-professional wrestler fresh out of rehab, stumbles back into the picture with gruff intentions.

The show earned a 7.9 on IMDb and strong critical notices for its refusal to soften the edges of its subject matter. Production companies A24 and Blossom Films backed the series, which was shot in Southern California. Kelley, known for Big Little Lies and Ally McBeal, steers the tone somewhere between cringe comedy and genuine pathos, letting the awkward silences land as hard as the punchlines.

Margo Millet starts her freshman year at Fullerton College in suburban Orange County with a sharp wit and a talent for writing. Her mother Shyanne works at Bloomingdale's and is engaged to Kenny, a well-meaning but judgmental youth pastor. Margo's father Jinx, an ex-pro wrestler, has been absent since she was a child. Things shift when Margo's married English professor Mark takes an interest in her work and her. By the end of the first episode, she's pregnant.

Margo decides to keep the baby, drops out of school, and finds herself alone with a newborn and no money. She gets fired from her waitressing job and can't afford childcare. Desperate, she turns to OnlyFans, creating a flexible income stream that lets her stay home with her son Bodhi. What starts as survival gradually becomes something more as Margo discovers a kind of artistry in her work.

Her fractured family slowly reassembles. Jinx shows up at her door fresh from rehab, determined to be a better grandfather than he was a father. He moves in with Margo and her last remaining college roommate Susie, a cosplay enthusiast who becomes an essential part of the household. Shyanne keeps her distance, horrified to see her daughter repeating the same mistakes she made as a young single mother.

The season's central conflict builds toward a custody battle. Child protective services gets called after a family crisis in episode seven, and Mark decides to pursue custody, claiming Margo preyed on him. The show spends its run exploring financial survival, the stigma around sex work, and the messy love between parents and children. Kelley chose to cut a romantic subplot from the novel, keeping the focus on family dynamics and the idea of chosen family.
