Marcelo Ríos's place in tennis history is unique. He is the only man to reach world No. 1 without winning a Grand Slam, and he did it in an era dominated by Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi. His 1998 season, when he won five Masters titles including the clay sweep, has never been matched. Fellow players have called him one of the most talented ever to pick up a racket.

AwardsRíos won 18 ATP Tour singles titles, including five Masters 1000 events. He was named the ATP Most Improved Player in 1997 and received the ATP Sportsmanship Award in 1998. In 2000, he won the Olympic silver medal in doubles at the Sydney Games, though that is not officially an ATP title.
