Born in New Orleans in 1810, Marcel was the son of a female slave and the Governor of Louisiana. Despite being the Governor's biological son, he was born into slavery and subjected to brutal treatment. Klaus Mikaelson rescued him from that life, raising him as his own son and teaching him to fight and survive. However, when the Mikaelson siblings fled New Orleans to escape their father Mikael, they abandoned Marcel, leaving him to fend for himself.

After the Mikaelsons' departure, Marcel rebuilt New Orleans from the ground up.
