Manhunt
"Hide. Hunt. Kill."
Overview
James Earl Cash wakes up on death row only to find his executioner is a hidden camera crew. This 2003 release from Rockstar North drops players into the grimy underbelly of Carcer City, where survival depends on stealth rather than firepower. You must stalk and eliminate rival gang members while remaining unseen, turning every alleyway and rooftop into a potential kill zone for snuff films being broadcast to an unseen audience.
The narrative follows Cash as he fights against The Septics, a sadistic organization forcing inmates to perform in their brutal productions. Players navigate dark environments using flashlights and improvised weapons to survive waves of attackers. The gameplay demands patience and precision as you avoid detection or face immediate termination by the game's hostile AI.
Gameplay
Players control James Earl Cash through a series of levels set in the fictional Carcer City. The core loop requires the player to remain undetected by enemies who patrol specific routes. Flashlights serve a dual purpose for navigation and blinding foes before striking. When detected, combat becomes lethal with no option to retreat, forcing the player to use context-sensitive executions.
A unique sanity meter tracks Cash's mental state as he commits violent acts. High violence levels trigger hallucinations that distort audio and visual elements, adding psychological pressure to the stealth mechanics. Weapons are scavenged from the environment and degrade with use, emphasizing resource management over ammunition hunting.
Story
Convicted murderer James Earl Cash awakens in a prison cell expecting execution but instead finds himself captured by The Septics. This group of filmmakers broadcasts snuff films to an underground audience and forces Cash to kill other inmates and corrupt officials to stay alive. The organization manipulates the prison system to create a blood sport where the audience dictates the outcome.
Cash navigates the hierarchy of the prison gangs while uncovering the conspiracy behind his imprisonment. He eventually confronts the leaders of The Septics to end the broadcasts. The story concludes with Cash escaping the facility after dismantling the operation that sought to monetize his suffering.
