About
Manchester United Football Club is one of the most iconic and successful teams in English football history. Founded in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR Football Club by railway workers, the club was renamed on April 24, 1902, after a financial rescue led by local brewer John Henry Davies. Based at Old Trafford in Greater Manchester, the club has won a record 20 English top-flight league titles, including 13 Premier League crowns. Their passionate fanbase, known as the Red Army, fills the 74,500-capacity stadium for every home match, creating an electric atmosphere.
Under legendary managers Matt Busby and Alex Ferguson, United built dynasties that dominated domestic and European competitions. Busby's Busby Babes won league titles in 1955-56 and 1956-57 before the 1958 Munich air disaster killed eight players. Ferguson's 26-year reign brought 38 trophies, including the historic 1999 treble of Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League. Today, the club competes in the Premier League under head coach Ruben Amorim, appointed in November 2024, with fierce rivalries against Liverpool and Manchester City defining each season.
History
Manchester United began as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878, formed by railway workers. The team played at North Road and later Bank Street, joining the Football League in 1892. Financial troubles in 1902 led to a rescue by local businessmen, including John Henry Davies, who renamed the club Manchester United on April 24, 1902. Under manager Ernest Mangnall, the club won its first league title in 1907-08 and the FA Cup in 1909, moving to Old Trafford in 1910.
Matt Busby took over in 1945, building the Busby Babes, a young squad that won league titles in 1955-56 and 1956-57. The 1958 Munich air disaster killed eight players, but Busby rebuilt, winning the 1968 European Cup with stars Bobby Charlton, George Best, and Denis Law. Alex Ferguson arrived in 1986 and transformed the club, winning 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, and two Champions League trophies. His 1999 team achieved an unprecedented treble. Since Ferguson's retirement in 2013, the club has had seven permanent managers: David Moyes (2013-2014), Louis van Gaal (2014-2016), Jose Mourinho (2016-2018), Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (2018-2021), Ralf Rangnick (2021-2022), Erik ten Hag (2022-2024), and Ruben Amorim (2024-). Van Gaal won one FA Cup with a 52.43% win rate; Mourinho won three trophies (Europa League, League Cup, Community Shield) with a 58.33% win rate; Ten Hag won two trophies (FA Cup, League Cup) with a 54.69% win rate. Ten Hag was sacked in October 2024 after a poor start, with Ruud van Nistelrooy serving as interim for four matches (three wins, one draw) before Amorim's appointment.
