Oshii's Ghost in the Shell is widely regarded as one of the most influential animated films ever made, directly inspiring The Matrix and countless other works. Patlabor 2: The Movie is consistently ranked among the greatest anime films, praised for its political depth. In 2023, he received the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, from the Japanese government for his contributions to culture and film. He also received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2016 Tokyo Anime Award Festival.
