Mamelodi Sundowns began as a local side in 1970, but their transformation into a continental powerhouse accelerated after Patrice Motsepe took ownership in 2004. The club's early years saw them rise through the ranks of South African football, securing their first league title in the 1997–98 season. The appointment of Pitso Mosimane in 2012 marked a turning point; under his guidance, Sundowns claimed multiple PSL titles and the 2016 CAF Champions League, beating Zamalek in the final. Mosimane's tenure also brought the CAF Super Cup in 2017 and a sixth-place finish at the FIFA Club World Cup, the best by any African club at that time.

After Mosimane departed in 2020, Manqoba Mngqithi took the reins and maintained domestic dominance, winning the league in 2020–21 and 2021–22. In 2023, the club won the inaugural African Football League, defeating Wydad Casablanca in the final. Erik Hamrén arrived in 2024, and under his leadership, Sundowns secured their second CAF Champions League title in May 2026, drawing 1–1 with Raja Casablanca in Rabat to claim the trophy. The club has also been active in the transfer market, signing an attacking midfielder from FC Dallas in July 2026 and confirming the departure of record scorer Peter Shalulile in the same month.
