About
The MAMA Awards, known before 2022 as the Mnet Asian Music Awards, stands as a premier annual music awards ceremony, organized by the entertainment powerhouse CJ ENM. While it primarily celebrates K-pop artists and their immense global influence, the event also recognizes talented musicians from across Asia through various categories like Best Asian Artist. This dynamic show highlights achievements in music videos, songs, albums, and captivating live performances, making it a significant date in the global music calendar.
First launched in 1999 in Seoul, South Korea, the event initially aired on Mnet, a music channel owned by CJ ENM. From its beginnings as a music video-focused festival, it has evolved into a grand spectacle, featuring elaborate stages and collaborations. Over the years, the MAMA Awards has significantly expanded its footprint, moving beyond South Korea to host ceremonies in major cities across Asia, including Singapore, Japan, and China. More recently, the event has even broadened its reach to the United States, cementing its status as a truly international platform for Asian music. The ceremony typically takes place over one to two days in late November, offering a vibrant showcase of musical talent and innovation to millions of fans worldwide.
History
The MAMA Awards began its journey in 1999 as the Mnet Music Video Festival, taking inspiration from Western music video awards shows like the MTV Video Music Awards. It was founded by Mnet, a music channel now part of CJ ENM. For its first few years, the event focused heavily on recognizing excellence in music videos, held exclusively in Seoul.
The festival underwent several name changes as it grew and evolved. From 2000 to 2003, it continued as the Mnet Music Video Festival. A merger with the KMTV Korean Music Awards led to its renaming as the Mnet KM Music Video Festival (2004–2005), and then simply the Mnet KM Music Festival (2006–2008). A major shift occurred in 2009 when it was rebranded as the Mnet Asian Music Awards, or MAMA. This change reflected its ambition to expand beyond South Korea and celebrate artists across the entire Asian continent. The first international edition took place in Singapore in 2010. In 2022, CJ ENM once again updated the name to the MAMA Awards, signifying another phase of global expansion and a renewed focus on its established brand identity.
