Major Garrett

Major Garrett does not have a trophy case, and that is not the point. His standing in Washington journalism comes from three decades of procedural reporting that other correspondents rely on. He spent more than a decade at National Journal mastering the mechanics of Congress, then brought that knowledge to Fox News and later to CBS News, where he has covered four presidential administrations. The book The Enduring Revolution extended his analysis of Congress into long-form history. What he has built instead of awards is a reputation for accuracy and clarity. Colleagues cite his budget coverage. Journalism students study his interviews. The Takeout has given him a format where his curiosity and his dry humor can coexist with hard questions. That is a different kind of distinction, and in the news business it is the one that lasts.
