Founded in Paris in 1988 by Belgian designer Martin Margiela and Jenny Meirens, Maison Margiela, initially known as Maison Martin Margiela, emerged as a distinctive voice in the luxury fashion landscape. The house quickly became synonymous with deconstruction and avant-garde aesthetics, challenging traditional notions of beauty and wearability. Their approach involved using unconventional materials and presenting collections in unexpected locations, from disused metro stations to bustling street corners, always with the intention of focusing attention squarely on the garments themselves. Models' faces were frequently obscured, further emphasizing the clothing over the wearer. This dedication to conceptual design continues to shape the brand's identity.

Maison Margiela operates on two distinct yet interconnected creative planes: the haute couture-inspired Artisanal collections and the more accessible ready-to-wear lines.
