    About

Mahan Air took to the skies in 1992 with a single Tupolev Tu-154, becoming Iran's first private airline. Its founder, the late Hamid Arabnejad, built the carrier around a fleet that would grow to include Airbus A340s and Boeing 747s, all painted in a signature shade of purple. From its base at Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport, the airline quickly expanded to Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, marketing itself as a full-service carrier with Persian hospitality at its core.

But that expansion collided with geopolitics. The U.S. Treasury sanctioned Mahan Air in 2011, alleging it provided support to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' Quds Force. European nations followed: Germany, France, Italy, and Spain revoked landing rights between 2019 and 2020, citing arms shipments to Syria and Venezuela. In 2024, the European Union imposed fresh sanctions for transporting Iranian drones to Russia. The airline denies official ties to the IRGC, though the allegations have effectively grounded its European network.

Today, Mahan Air operates a truncated international network focused on Asia, including routes to Bangkok, Dubai, Istanbul, and multiple Chinese cities. Its fleet, aging under sanctions that block access to Western parts and maintenance, still flies domestic routes from Tehran's Mehrabad Airport. The airline's cargo division and charter services continue, and it maintains an active social media presence. Despite the restrictions, Mahan Air remains one of Iran's largest private carriers, a symbol of both the country's aviation ambitions and the sanctions that constrain them.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Who owns Mahan Air?
Mahan Air is officially a private airline founded by Hamid Arabnejad and owned by the Mol-Al-Movahedin Charity Institute. However, the US and EU governments have sanctioned it, alleging that it is effectively controlled by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC-Quds Force).
Who is the CEO of Mahan Air?
The CEO of Mahan Air is Dr. Ahmad Reza Ghanbari, who has held the position since 2019. He was sanctioned by the US Treasury in 2023 for his role in the airline's operations and its alleged support for the IRGC.
Is Mahan Air still in business?
Yes, Mahan Air is still in business as of 2025. Despite extensive US, EU, and UK sanctions that have banned it from European airspace and blocked its access to aircraft parts, it continues to operate domestic flights and international routes to Asia (especially China), the Middle East, and Turkey.
Is Mahan Air safe to fly?
Mahan Air holds a safety rating from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and its fleet has been maintained, though it is aging due to sanctions. However, the airline is banned from flying in EU and US airspace, and many international aviation authorities advise against flying on it due to its sanctioned status and lack of access to Western maintenance support.
Mahan Air vs Iran Air: which is better?
Mahan Air is a private, full-service carrier often considered more luxurious than Iran Air (the state-owned flag carrier), with better in-flight service and a more modern (though aging) fleet. However, Iran Air has a broader international network and is not subject to the same level of sanctions that restrict Mahan Air's operations and reputation.
