Magical Girl Raising Project
"Mahō Shōjo Ikusei Keikaku"
Asari Endō
Overview
Asari Endō and illustrator Maruino launched a dark twist on the magical girl genre with Magical Girl Raising Project in June 2012. Takarajimasha released seventeen volumes under their Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! Bunko imprint, while Yen Press brought the English translation to readers. The story strips away the typical friendship and hope found in standard series. Instead, it pits young girls against each other in a deadly game where only one winner survives.
The narrative begins when sixteen participants are summoned to Nabuka by a mysterious system that promises a one-in-ten-thousand chance of becoming real magical girls. Snow White, a high school student named Koyuki Himekawa, wins this lottery but quickly discovers the catch: the rules state that only eight of them can remain alive. As the elimination process starts, alliances shatter and characters like Ripple and Weiss Winterprison use their unique powers to hunt down their peers. The plot moves through a brutal battle royale where psychological trauma and graphic violence replace the usual themes of justice and camaraderie.
