Tanpopo Ohanami is a quiet high school girl whose name means dandelion, and that's not the only thing the flower has to do with her life. In August 2024, Kaeru Mizuho launched this manga in Shogakukan's Sho-Comi magazine, and from the first chapter it upends the usual magical girl formula. Tanpopo doesn't get a cute mascot or a straightforward mission. Instead, she's recruited by an organization called Butterfly to fight monstrous fiends, but she soon finds herself allied with one of them: a creature named Shade. Their bond isn't romantic, which is a deliberate twist on shōjo conventions, and it forces Tanpopo to question who the real enemy is.

The series leans into dark fantasy and environmental themes. Tanpopo's powers are tied to nature, and the story pits her against industrial forces that threaten the natural world. Volume 1 pushes her to make controversial choices early on, and she has to live with the consequences. By Volume 2, she's battling a character named Alice in a mirror realm, and a new threat emerges. Mizuho's art mixes delicate linework with dynamic action, and the moral ambiguity sets it apart from brighter magical girl tales.

VIZ Media licensed the series for English simulpublication on its VIZ Manga app in October 2024, and physical volumes began arriving in 2026. The English edition of Volume 1 carries the ISBN 9781974757794. Fan communities have sprung up around the title, including a Fandom wiki and a Reddit subreddit, and it was selected for MyAnimeList's 'You Should Read This Manga 2026' list, highlighting its growing appeal among readers who want their magical girls with a dose of gray morality.
