    Overview

Shinobu Ohtaka created Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, a fantasy manga that ran in Weekly Shōnen Sunday from June 2009 to October 2017. Shogakukan collected the story into 37 volumes, and Viz Media brought the series to English-speaking readers. The narrative draws heavily from One Thousand and One Nights, placing young Aladdin and Alibaba on a quest through dangerous dungeons. These locations hide djinn spirits capable of granting immense power to those who conquer them. After clearing their first dungeon, Aladdin discovers he is a Magi, a figure destined to crown kings, which leads him to anoint Alibaba as a future ruler. Their journey expands as they build alliances and face enemies across a world filled with magic and political intrigue. The franchise expanded beyond the original text with a prequel titled Magi: Adventure of Sinbad, which ran from 2013 to 2018. An anime adaptation by A-1 Pictures also debuted in 2012, splitting its run into two seasons that aired until 2014. Distributors like Aniplex of America and Kazé handled releases in North America and the UK respectively. Critics recognized the work's quality when it won the 59th Shogakukan Manga Award for shōnen in 2014. By April 2018, sales figures showed over 25 million copies were in circulation worldwide.
