Mac Gargan

MacDonald Gargan was born in Yonkers, New York. After graduating high school, he worked as a private investigator, often skirting the law. In The Amazing Spider-Man #19, J. Jonah Jameson hired Gargan to uncover how Peter Parker got his exclusive Spider-Man photos. Gargan's presence triggered Peter's spider-sense, allowing the teen to evade him easily. Frustrated, Jameson decided to create a super-powered adversary for Spider-Man. In the next issue, Dr. Farley Stillwell subjected Gargan to an experimental procedure that granted him the characteristics of a scorpion, a natural predator of spiders. The process endowed Gargan with enhanced strength, durability, and a powerful mechanical tail. However, the mutagenic treatment also warped his mind, driving him insane. Instead of targeting Spider-Man exclusively, Gargan turned to a life of crime, holding a grudge against Jameson for his condition. [edit]

Mac Gargan is defined by instability, brutality, and a deep-seated hatred for Spider-Man and J. Jonah Jameson. The Scorpion mutation permanently affected his mental state, making him volatile and prone to violent outbursts. Over the years, he received multiple upgraded suits, including a cybernetically linked fifth suit from Alastair Smythe that granted a "scorpion-sense" similar to Spider-Man's spider-sense. In Marvel Knights: Spider-Man #10, Gargan bonded with the Venom symbiote, becoming the third Venom. Initially afraid of the symbiote, he eventually embraced its bloodlust, becoming even more vicious. As Venom, he joined Norman Osborn's Dark Avengers in 2009, impersonating Spider-Man. The team treated him as a joke, and he was constantly bullied by teammates like Bullseye and Daken. After the symbiote left him, Gargan later transformed into the entity known as Virus in Venom (vol. 4) #25.
