Maariv

Launched on February 15, 1948, just weeks before the State of Israel declared independence, Maariv began as a bold alternative to existing press outlets. A group of journalists and editors led by Azriel Carlebach split from the rival publication Yedioth Ahronoth to establish this new Hebrew-language daily in Tel Aviv. The founders sought to carve out a distinct voice in a media landscape that was rapidly evolving alongside the young nation.

The brand has maintained a rigorous publishing schedule for over seven decades, releasing editions from Sunday through Thursday under the title Ma'ariv Hashavu'a. Its Friday edition, Ma'ariv SofHashavu'a, targets weekend readers with specialized content. A separate morning tabloid called Ma'ariv Haboker operates as a free weekday distribution, currently ranking as the fourth-largest newspaper in the country by circulation behind Israel HaYom, Yedioth Ahronoth, and Haaretz.

Digital expansion has kept the institution relevant as print markets shift globally. Maariv Online serves as the primary hub for investigative reporting and news analysis, supported by a dedicated mobile application available on major platforms. Since May 2014, co-editors-in-chief Doron Cohen and Golan Bar-Yosef have steered the editorial direction through periods of intense political volatility and security challenges. [edit]
