Ma Ying-jeou's career is marked by a series of historic firsts. He was the youngest cabinet member in Taiwan's history at age 38, and his election as president in 2008 represented the second peaceful transfer of power in Taiwan's democratic history. His most notable achievement was the 2015 Singapore summit with Xi Jinping, the first meeting between the leaders of the two sides of the Taiwan Strait since 1945. His tenure also saw the signing of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement, a landmark trade pact with mainland China.
